[ INSIGHTS ]
I spoke with five food waste practitioners. Three key learnings emerged from my research.
They understand that expiration and “best by” dates are advisory and refer to the quality of the product, not whether the food is safe to eat.
They will go out of their way to make use of older produce and avoid tossing it.
They are motivated by the monetary and environmental consequences of their actions.
[ JOURNEY MAP ]
[ OPPORTUNITY #1 ]
How do you convey to users that their perishables are safe to eat past their expiration dates?
[ SOLUTION ]
Demonstrate at what development stage an item is in and provide a look into what is expected to happen next.
Utilize the loyalty card shopper’s recent purchasing activities to provide timely tips to maximize the item’s longevity.
[ OPPORTUNITY #2 ]
How might we empower users to utilize their produce before it spoils?
[ SOLUTION ]
Curate a personalized recipe list utilizing both “past-their-prime” and fresh produce already found within the home.
[ OPPORTUNITY #3 ]
How might we help users understand how their consumption behavior can impact their environment and grocery bills?
[ SOLUTION ]
Discourage food waste by highlighting the financial and ecological impact of their wasteful behavior.
